Hip-hop’s best producer is collaborating with rap’s most accomplished MC in a rare alignment of musical titans.
It’s been reported that Jay-Z is holed up in the studio with Dr. Dre for Detox’s first single, “Under Pressure.” Dre is also promoting new headphones for the Boston Red Sox.
Jimmy Iovine confirmed that the two hip-hop heavyweights have linked up for the single, while Dre is touting the song in advance as the perfect at-bat song for famed Sox slugger David Ortiz. “Ortiz, absolutely. That’s Big Papi,” Dre told nesn.com.
No word yet from Dre’s or Jay’s camps on when the single will be released to the public.
Dre was in Boston for the opening of the 2010 baseball season contest between ultra-enemies Boston and New York Yankees. Draped in red Boston gear, Dre took a few swings in the batting cages before the game.
“I’m rooting for Boston, of course!” Dre said. “Hands down these are the best-sounding headphones in the world. If you don’t have them you need to check them out. They’re hot and you won’t be let down, trust me.”
Iovine concurred, stating that the partnership made sense. “To be very frank, we wanted a great team with a great fan base and a great organization,” Iovine said. “When Red Sox chairman [Tom Warner] asked, ‘Hey you want to do something with the Red Sox?’ We were like, ‘Hey, they’re a great organization. Why not? Let’s try it.’ ”
Sports superstar LeBron James was also on hand with Dre in Boston as his Cavs took on the Celtics earlier in the day. –terry shropshire
