Olympic and world champion sprinter LaShawn Merritt was only trying to boost his “groove.” Turns out the over-the-counter male enhancements he used to do so contained a substance banned by his sport. He has accepted a provisional suspension after testing positive for the drug.
Merritt, who won gold medals in the 400 meters and as a member of the 1,600 relay in Beijing, failed three successive tests between October and January, according to a release from his lawyer, Howard Jacobs.
The athlete hopes his family, friends and sponsors will forgive him for making “a foolish, immature and egotistical mistake.” He will not compete until the case has been decided.
