Last night, Precious star Gabby Sidibe appeared on “Saturday Night Live” … and I’m not sure what to make of it.
I don’t really know what I was expecting, since I haven’t been exposed to the range of her acting abilities, but I wasn’t necessarily expecting what I saw, either. In fact, I was a little uncomfortable with some of her skits.
Before my uneasiness conveniently put me to sleep, I managed to catch her portraying a dreadlocked but dimwitted nurse — with a strange dialect — on the “Suze Orman Show”; a participant in a cherry spitting challenge, wherein she and her competitor oddly spat cherries into one another’s mouths from afar; as a “Millionaire” contestant that ended up choking host Steve Harvey (Kenan Thompson) out of frustration with his mispronunciation of words; and a Wikipedia smart, but angry older black woman, who sat in a window barking out intellectual rants. In the opening sketch, which was the most entertaining due to her effervescence, she worked to convince people that she isn’t “Precious,” but a “happy Gabby.” With the exception of the latter, none were funny and they bordered on being stereotypically awkward.
The writers missed it on this episode. There were other ways to utilize the Oscar-nominated, full-figured black woman on the show, but they neglected to stretch their creative minds to find them. They, instead, relied upon near offensive material that possibly played into questionable black images in the media.
Maybe I’m being a little too sensitive, but I just didn’t like it. Hopefully, there was some redemption after I dozed off. Was there? –gerald radford
