Mike Tyson was once the most feared and wealthiest man in the sport of boxing. But 23 years after becoming the youngest heavyweight champion in the world, Tyson has fallen on hard times. During a recent interview, Tyson admitted that he had squandered away the $300 million that he earned during his career.
“I’m totally destitute and broke,” Tyson said. “But I have an awesome life, I have an awesome wife who cares about me … I had a lot of fun. It [going broke] just happened. I’m very grateful. I don’t deserve to have the wife that I have; I don’t deserve the kids that I have, but I do, and I’m very grateful.”
Although Tyson can no longer box competitively at age 43, he’s still an intriguing individual and should be able to find ways to earn a living from his name alone. He has his own reality show on the Discovery Chanel called “Taking on Tyson,” he recently appeared on an Italian version of “Dancing With the Stars,” and turned in a hilarious performance in the Golden Globe Award-winning hit comedy The Hangover. –a.r.
