Chicago – A black man was killed by a CVS employee for stealing a tube of toothpaste in a Chicago area store. On Sunday, May 10, Anthony Keyser, 35, concealed the toothpaste in his jacket and exited the store without paying. An employee who witnessed the theft ran after Keyser and caught him in an alley, where he placed him in a chokehold.
Keyser yelled that he couldn’t breathe and soon fell unconscious and died. A medical examiner has ruled the death a homicide, but police have yet to press charges against the employee and are ruling the death accidental. Keyser’s family is understandably upset and is planning to sue either CVS or the city of Chicago.
Was the CVS employee entitled to punish a man who committed a criminal act, or should he face murder charges for taking the law into his own hands? –a.r.
