For the first time, Venus Williams has secured a spot in the clay court Madrid Masters final. She downed Shahar Peer of Israel, 6-3, 6-0 in just over an hour.

Clay isn’t the best surface for Venus or Serena (her world no. 1 sister, who was eliminated in the third round); however, Venus has convincingly advanced through her section of the draw on the tricky surface to earn a chance to take the title. She will compete for the trophy with either Lucie Safarova or Aravane Rezai, both unseeded players.

The Madrid tournament is part of the “road to Roland Garros” series, as it readies the world’s top players to compete in the grueling grand slam event. Garros, also known as the French Open, runs from May 23 to June 6.
