Manute Bol Dies at 47; 3 Reasons Every NBA Player Should Be Like ManuteFormer NBA player Manute Bol died Saturday, June 19, at the age of 47 after suffering from a skin disease called Steven-Johnson Syndrome. Bol played in the NBA during the late ’80s and early ’90s and became a well-known presence in the league because of his 7 foot 6 frame. But Bol’s work on the court doesn’t compare to his philanthropic achievements off the court. Here are three reasons every NBA player should follow Bol’s lead by helping their communities.-a.r.

Advocate for Education – Because 80 percent of the citizens of Sudan are illiterate and most of the kids learn outside or at inadequate educational facilities, Bol spent millions of his own money to build a school. His goal was to build 41 schools in the region.

Advocate for Freedom – Although Bol went bankrupt after spending most of his money on aid to his country, he continued to fight for his country’s freedom by participating in the 2006 Sudan Freedom Walk, which brought awareness to modern day slavery.

Advocate for the Alliance for the Lost Boys – Bol was also a major contributor to the Alliance for the Lost Boys of Sudan. The alliance provides funding for the thousands of boys who were displaced during the Sudanese Civil War. Over two million people were killed and Bol lost over 200 family members.
