Although Lil Wayne is currently serving a one-year sentence at Rikers Island in New York, he was scheduled to appear in a Yuma County, Arizona, courtroom several days ago. But instead of transporting the inmate across the country, officials at Riker Island allowed Weezy to enter a plea via video.
After initially pleading not guilty to drugs and gun possession, Lil Wayne decided to change his plea to guilty and will serve 36 months of probation instead of jail time.
The charge stems from a 2008 incident where Lil Wayne’s tour bus was stopped by the U.S. Border Patrol near Yuma. Authorities discovered cocaine, ecstasy, marijuana and a .40 caliber handgun.
Lil Wayne continues to record songs while behind bars at Rikers Island. The rapper even appeared on Drake’s Thank Me Later album. He rapped over the phone as an engineer played an instrumental and recorded his voice for the song, “Light Up.” Lil Wayne is scheduled to be released in November. –a.r.
