Williams Sisters Fall on Clay, Fresh Start on Grass

LONDON; The Grand Slam grass tournament of the year, has officially kicked off and both Williams have a made a fresh and inspired start at Wimbledon.

Venus — this time in a Wimbledon white Tina Turner-ish outfit — decisively beat her opponent, Rossansa De Los Rios, 6-3,6-2 on Monday. Serena, blew through her first round opponent, Michelle Larcher De Brito, 6-0,6-4 earlier in the day.

The sisters have dominated Wimbledon for the last several years, with Venus being a five-time champion and Serena three, having beaten her older sister out for last year’s title. This year however, two formidable contenders with former world No. 1 rankings, Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin, have returned to the WTA and both are hungry for a win at the prestigious England-based tournament.

Aside from hard courts, and contrary to clay, grass seems to fit the power and aggression that the Williams bring to the game. If history is to repeat itself, being that they are ranked at Nos. 1 and 2 in the world and are on opposite sides of the draw, they are destined to meet in the final for the second straight year and fourth overall.       –gerald radford
