3 Reasons Lauryn Hill Should Avoid a Comeback

Word on the street is that Lauryn Hill is planning a comeback. And while we’ve yet to hear it straight from the singer’s mouth, the mere idea of her stepping back into the limelight made us ponder the following: Is a Lauryn Hill comeback really a good thing?

Well, the nostalgic side of me would love to see her return. But this isn’t 1998, and a comeback at this point may be the worst possible idea. Here’s why.

 1. Too Deep For Her Own Good?

Hill has always been an artist whose thoughts were much deeper than the average entertainer. And as her fame increased, so did the gravity of her message. Her displeasure with the state of the industry and discomfort with fame began to wear on her and started to seep into her music. This was evidenced by her 2002 Unplugged album, which featured Hill sitting on a stool plucking away on a guitar. The message in the music was so dense that it was inaccessible to the average listener. If her new music follows this same formula, then it will almost certainly be greeted with a tepid response.

2. Family To Consider

When Lauryn Hill first entered the biz, she could fully devote her time and energy to the rigors of the industry since she didn’t have any kids. As the albums began to roll out, the kids followed soon after. Now 10 years later, Hill is the proud mother of five kids.

Not to sound skeptical of her ability to juggle motherhood and entertainment, but can she juggle both? After all, it’s not like Rohan Marley is going to be nominated for Father of the Year anytime soon.

3. A Picture’s Worth A Thousand Words

Back in the day, Lauryn Hill was arguably the most beautiful woman in hip-hop.

Now, she resembles Tyrone Biggums from “Chappelle’s Show.”

In an increasingly superficial entertainment industry, is the public really ready to accept the 2010 version of Lauryn Hill. As petty as it may sound, I contend that they are not.

Ro’s Question of the Day: So what are your thoughts on a possible Lauryn Hill comeback. Are you all for it, or do you also think that it may be a bad idea? Let’s talk about it. –dewayne rogers
