With contract negotiations stalled with the defending champions in Los Angeles, Derek Fisher flew to Miami to give the Heat an audience about joining their superstar trio.

Fisher, who has won five NBA titles with the Lakers, is going to meet with Heat President Pat Riley on Saturday to see if they can negotiate a mutually agreeable contract.

It’s no secret that Miami is trying to fill its roster to complement the high-profile acquisitions of LeBron James and Chris Bosh along with in-house superstar Dwyane Wade in order to procure enough firepower to win multiple NBA championships.

The Los Angeles Times quotes an inside source who said that Fisher is unlikely to cross enemy lines and “sleep with the enemy” across the continent in South Beach — much less ignite the ire of one of the greatest competitors in NBA history, Kobe Bryant.

Also problematic is the contract issue and the financial wiggle-room to squeeze Fisher under the salary cap. The Times reports that but with each of the three stars agreeing to multiyear deals just under the maximum of $16.6 million a year, and with the Heat nearing a five-year deal for almost $30 million with free-agent sharpshooter Mike Miller and close to an agreement with free agent Udonis Haslem, Miami can probably offer Fisher only the veteran’s minimum of $1.352 million.

However, with Fisher financially secure beyond his wildest imagination, he may be looking for a new challenge of bringing a championship to a new city. That could be the impetus for Fisher accepting a smaller contract to join something potentially historic. –terry shropshire
