If you’ve tired of the routine weekend outings and are looking for a grown-and-sexy, culturally enriching date with your significant other, then you should opt for the Friday Jazz Series at Atlanta‘s High Museum.
The High Museum is centrally located within the artistic, business and nightclub district of bustling Midtown Atlanta. And the Friday Jazz Series, featuring the likes of internationally renowned jazz artist Melvin Jones and others, offers a cost-efficient night on the town.
“The Friday Jazz Series is a great date. It offers a great alternative [to] the movies or the club. You’re exposed to the music, and you’re exposed to the art, too,” says Aalyah Duncan, the marketing coordinator for the High Museum. “In the urban community, the museums are not necessarily the No. 1 choice to explore. But what drives urban professionals here is the music.”
Just as important is the timing of the event. Because the Friday Jazz Series at the High Museum, which features a different jazz artist at each event, runs from 5 to 10 p.m., it makes it possible to still go to the clubs if a single person or couple wishes to. And there’s another twist to the jazz outing, Duncan points out.
“It is not every Friday, but every third Friday. And that’s what makes it so unique because if you are a couple looking to go to that special event and given the fact that we are still trying to recover from a recession, disposable income is not there,” she says. “You can take $18 — and if you’re a couple, then that’s $36 — for one night of great, live jazz music that you’re not going to get anywhere else because there’s no other place, in my opinion, that has great live jazz music. For $36, you can hear great music and explore the entire museum. It’s cheaper than the movies or going to a club.”
And, unlike the nightclub, where quality people is going to be in short supply, there will be no shortage of such upwardly mobile, ambitious and multilayered individuals to meet or hang out with. As Duncan points out, the Friday Jazz Series makes for a great night out for a single person or one with a date, or married couple looking for something unique. And you still get home at a decent hour. –terry shropshire
