Ex-NBA Player Lorenzen Wright Killed in Memphis, Tenn.; 5 Deadliest Cities for Blacks

Basketball allowed Lorenzen Wright to visit nearly every major city in America and earn enough money to travel around the world. But  after 13 years as an NBA star, Wright was murdered in his hometown of Memphis, Tenn.

Wright’s body was discovered in a wooded area in the southeast section of the city. He was reported missing by family on July 18 after leaving his ex-wife’s home with a large sum of money. He planned to take his six children back to his home in Atlanta the following day.

A call was made to 911 on the night he left his ex-wife’s home. Nearly 10 shots were heard by the 911 operator and a man yelled an expletive over the phone before the call was cut off.

There are certain cities where crime affects blacks at a disproportionate rate. Here are the five most dangerous cities in America for blacks to live in. –amir shaw

Detroit – The city that profited mightily from the booming auto industry and Motown records over 40 years ago is merely a shell of its former self. Along with the lack of employment and subpar education systems, Detroit experienced 361 murders in 2009.

Memphis – An unstable economy and poor schools have ruined this city. Although crime reportedly dropped in the city for the first time in five years, 142 people were still murdered in 2009.

New Orleans – The city that is still recovering from Hurricane Katrina five years later has the highest murder rate per capita. According to the U.S. Bureau of Statistics, the city had a murder rate of 52 per 100,000 in 2009.

Baltimore – Only 30 minutes away from the nation’s capitol, Baltimore is the epitome of a failed major American city. Over 230 people were killed in 2009.

Richmond, Calif. – This city situated a few miles north of Oakland only has 103,000 residents, but there were 46 murders per 100,000 residents, making it the second deadliest city in America.
