The New York Department of Correctional Services recently denied NFL star Plaxico Burress permission to leave jail to participate in a work release program. Burress was convicted of illegal gun possession and sentenced to two years after shooting himself inside a New York nightclub.
“The serious and negative impact illegal guns have on the community, coupled with [the] dangerous nature of the weapon discharging in a public place renders him unsuitable [for] work release participation,” officials stated.
New York appears to be as racially insensitive as Mississippi when it comes to equal justice.
There is a chance that Burress, a guy with no prior convictions before his arrest, has learned his lesson. As a 33-year-old, Burress understands that he has about 30 months left to play in the NFL and will do everything possible to stay out of trouble in order to resume his career. Burress is not a threat to the citizens of New York. However, there are several known murderers who continue to walk the streets of New York with impunity.
Detectives Gescard Isnora, Paul Headley, Michael Oliver and Marc Cooper and Officer Michael Carey shot at Sean Bell 50 times in December of 2006. Bell was unarmed and was killed on the night before his wedding. The killers were all acquitted.
If Burress is unsuitable to return to society or participate in a work release program because he carried a gun and shot himself, it’s hard to understand how a group of police officers who viciously murdered a black man will never serve a day behind bars. –a.r.
