Why did you create the B. Lynn group?
I stumbled across the concept of an agency while working with Crystal [a stylist] when she first started out as a stylist. And as soon as I understood that I could create a business based on assisting creative people get their work out to the world, I was sold! I admire creative people and love to be the person who helps to get the clients, projects, etc. [It’s] my way of helping to keep the world colorful and I make money doing it, which is just the icing on the cake.
What are three important steps that every entrepreneur should take?
You must understand your market and your competition. A product is only as good as the consumer views it. Learn how to market your product so that the consumer can’t live without it.
What types of challenges do you face as a woman in business that sometimes makes you think that if you were a male CEO this wouldn’t be happening?
As a female business woman, there are simply meetings/opportunities that we are not even invited to participate in. Most businesses are still “boy’s clubs” but the world is changing – we women do not have time to cry about it. We need to create our own club that will make the boys start knocking at our doors for opportunities. A smart, sharp business person is an asset no matter the gender or race.
What are some technology/gadgets that you can’t live without?
BlackBerry and I now LOVE my iPad.
When traveling (business trip), what should every woman pack?
A light sweater, ballet flats, flat iron, and black leggings!
What periodicals do you read from the NY Times to WWD (Women’s Wear Daily)?
Most of my reading these days is limited to children’s books, but when I can grab a moment I definitely indulge in some of the weeklies like Us Weekly and People and I am a huge fan of Marie Claire.
What do you think about reality shows in general? What do think sets this one apart?
I don’t watch a bunch of TV and when I do, it is usually a good scripted drama, i.e. “Grey’s Anatomy” or “Mad Men.” But I do see the place that reality has in the entertainment world and if done right, it offers an opportunity to show the world that it takes many types to make this world go round. With reality, you have to take the good with the bad, but I think some great stories that may not have made it to scripted TV now have a new platform to be shown and shared.
