The  National Black MBA Association’s 32nd Annual Conference & Exposition held in Los Angeles recently, is the nation’s largest and most prestigious assembly of African American professionals. The impressive gathering of the crème de la crème of practicing and aspiring African American MBAs, CPAs entrepreneurs and students, focused on economic impact and working to integrate corporate  management and leadership roles to build wealth in the black community. More than 400 corporations attended to recruit and hire 2,000 professionals for positions throughout the nation.

A promising group of young students from high schools and colleges around the nation whose objective is to make a permanent mark on the future of finance and the country’s economic outlook, compete annually in the NBMBAA Case Competition. The hallmark event, sponsored by the Chrysler Group LLC, exclusively embraces the concept of including college and high school students who demonstrate an aptitude for business and resolving real world economic problems that can potentially alter the future of failing economies. The 2010 Case Competition afforded young African Americans contestants an opportunity to establish best practice scenarios for many of the problems presented, not the least of which was how to prepare for the task at hand.

Tameka Tyson, National Chair of Leaders of Tomorrow and Dr. Wendy Johnson President of the Houston Chapter were very excited, as the team took second place. They explained how the team of high school students assimilated from various schools in the Houston Area came together and put their thinking caps on and strategically devised an action plan.

Dr. Johnson: “Our programs educate and develop students on personal, academic and professional development. We have a very prestigious program, as over 80 students applied this year and only 55 students were selected.  We pride ourselves on ensuring that our students are mentored for the next level in life. We want to educate them about the various opportunities that exist and ensure that they are exposed accordingly.”

Tyson: We give them options and we expose them to successful business people and real world business models. Magic Johnson was here at the winner’s announcement today. The beauty is that when you see LOT mentors who are former students come back and work with current students. They reinforce that we are a global society, so there is always a global component to the competition and the students grasp that concept.”

Participating students received business case problems in March 2010 and 24 high school teams were included in this year’s competition.
