Even though this album veers away from his usual smooth jazz style, it has something for funk and jazz lovers alike. The combination of the two genres on Fonk works well together and Tisdale has created a fun, playful world of funk-jazz fusion that’s creatively balanced.
With titles like “Let’s Ride” (featuring George Duke) and “This Fonk is 4U” (featuring George Clinton) Tisdale shows his fans a very interesting, funny, funky side of himself that they are sure to enjoy. Seems to be the perfect way to memorialize such an inspired talent.
Tisdale’s band, the Fonkie Planetarians, are an authentic P-funk band that allows the respected bass player to bring his alter ego to life. If you never knew that he was an undercover funkteeter, songs like “Spread tha Butta” and Neckbones” will prove his funk authenticity.
“Been Here Before” (featuring the late Ali Woodson of the Temptations) is another stand out on the album, along with his own version of a Roger Troutman and ZAPP song called “Waymon’s Gotta Do It.” My personal favorite on this album is “If U Really Want to Know (I Like It Fonk-kaa).”
Wayman Tisdale wants music lovers to know that the funk is still alive and well, as is his spirit. This latest showing should permanently etch his artistry in music history. Prepare to be funkdafied and enjoy the P-funk, Tisdale style. –christa e. jackson
