ATLANTA – Bishop Eddie L. Long’s resignation was demanded by South Carolina pastor Bishop H. “Prophet” Walker in a rally at the Georgia statehouse Oct. 31 as part of a nationwide campaign to condemn homosexuality. They also want Long submit to an HIV test because they believe he didn’t use protection when he supposedly sodomized young boys.
Walker announced that this is the first of many rallies to come. They said they refuse to be intimidated by Long‘s followers nor by death threats.
“You think we are going to roll over? You think we’re not going to fight back? … Hell no,” said Bishop Walker barked into the microphone before his followers and local and national media. He also called Bishop Long “the devil” in interviews following the rally.
Walker and about 25 of his followers made the three-hour trek from True Light Pentecost Church in Spartanburg, S.C., and were joined by religious personalities from as far away as Dallas and Chicago. They want Bishop Long, pastor of the 25,000-member mega cathedral New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in nearby Lithonia, Ga., to resign from office, renounce his closet homosexuality and repent for allegedly abusing innocent teenage boys sexually.
A bright yellow sign announcing a new Web site, “So Long Eddie Wrong.com,” was clearly visible behind each of the speakers who came to the podium.
Dallas radio talk show host Reuben Armstrong, one of the organizers and speakers at the rally who flew into Atlanta just for the event, says God will see to it that Long resigns sooner or later. He authored Snakes In The Pulpit, a book that accused Long of homosexuality three years ago.
“I would equate Bishop Long to Jim Jones. I would not be surprised if his followers didn’t drink the Kool-Aid this morning,” Armstrong said.
During the sparsely attended rally, protestors said they plan rallies in capital cities of other states on the East Coast and will hold a major protest on the steps of the U.S. Capitol in an effort to reverse what they view as homosexuality running amok in the country.
“Homosexual practice is always wrong. It doesn’t matter if you practice it in public in San Francisco or secretly as a church leader, Mr. long,” said Peter Laberbera, president of Americans for Truth about Homosexuality. “I’m going to end today, Bishop Long, saying ‘if it don’t fit, you must quit,’ ” Laberbera said.
Bishop Walker also has President Obama in his religious crosshairs. “Obama has more homosexuals working in his administration than any other presidency in American history,” he claimed. “He even has a transsexual working for him.” –terry shropshire
