California Votes Against the Legalization of Marijuana; Young Weed Smokers Stayed Away From Polls

California’s Proposition 19 could have set a precedent for the prohibition of illegal drugs. The measure would have legalized marijuana in the state of California.

However, Prop. 19 didn’t pass largely because of the enthusiasm of conservative voters.

According to poll results, conservatives opposed it 70 to 30 percent. And although Democrats supported the bill 55 to 45 percent, the measure mostly failed because young voters failed to show up at the polls in California.

Only 13 percent of registered voters in California under the age of 30 voted on Tuesday.

But marijuana smokers will have another shot at legalizing the drug. In 2012, several states, including California, will place Prop. 19 on the ballot again. –a.r.
