When most people refer to The Supremes — Motown’s premier female group during the 1960’s, Diana Ross immediately comes to mind. Many are not aware that before “Ms. Mahogany” took the reigns as the lead singer and helped the group achieve mainstream success, Florence Ballard was the lead singer.
A new biopic by Spirit of Life Films titled Blondie – The Florence Ballard Story, with R&B songstress Faith Evans starring as the legendary Florence Ballard is scheduled to be released summer 2011. This is a natural fit because Evans has natural vocal talent and bears a strong resemblance to Ballard.
“Not only is this about re-birthing Florence Ballard’s legacy and giving her the accolades that she has deserved for 34 years, it also offers her children an opportunity to know their mother better and celebrate her life,” says Karen Spencer, a partner at Spirit of Life Films.
Faith has prepared for the role by spending time with Ballard’s family and studying her music and history.
The screenplay will be adapted from Peter Benjaminson’s book The Lost Supreme. Blondie will be directed by Bille Woodruff (Bring It On, Beauty Shop, Honey) and cast by Aleta Chappelle (The Godfather II, Beverly Hills Cop II, Boomerang, Introducing Dorothy Dandridge). The epic will be filmed in Atlanta. An all-star soundtrack will be released featuring various artists, including Lauryn Hill, Kelly Price and Faith Evans. –yvette caslin
