R&B singer Kelly Rowland has got some serious “Bills, Bills, Bills.“ Worse yet, her creditor is the collector of all collectors, the Internal Revenue Service, and they are after her beachfront property in Miami.
The former supporting cast member of Beyoncé’s Destiny’s Child group is delinquent in payments to the IRS and owes almost $100,000 in back taxes, according to the Detroit News. Public records show that Rowland, 29, has to scrape up $98,634 to reconcile her outstanding debt to the Department of the Treasury.
Rowland rose to fame with the No. 1 smash “Bills, Bills, Bills” with Destiny’s Child in 1999. They also scored Billboard chart-toppers with such club anthems as “Say My Name,” “Independent Woman” and “Survivor” en route to selling more than 40 million copies worldwide. But after the group disbanded and Rowland kicked father figure Mathew Knowles to the curb as her music manager, Rowland has had difficulty sustaining any relative momentum on the solo tip.
Her 2002 solo debut, Simply Deep, was certified gold and her 2007 joint, Ms. Kelly, pierced the Billboard 200 Top 10 and sold three million copies. Respectable numbers, but not nearly sufficient enough returns to support beachfront property.
There is hope. Rowland is scheduled to release her latest solo album, Kelly Rowland, in 2011. She also has a sporadic acting career, including portraying Motown legend Martha Reeves in the 2003 episode of the TV show “American Dreams.” Ironically, Reeves, a former Detroit councilwoman, was also found to be a tax delinquent. Rowland also has a stint as a co-host of the Bravo reality show “The Fashion” on her résumé.
Perhaps Rowland needs to dial up Daddy Knowles to help her crank her career back up. –terry shropshire
