Dee-1 has taken three of the most successful hip-hop artists to task. The New Orleans rapper has created a buzz for himself in hip-hop with the release of the single, “Jay, 50 and Weezy.”
More of critical assessment of their music than a diss record, Dee-1 sends a lyrical message to each rapper and explains why it’s important for them to be more responsible in hip-hop.
Dee-1 raps to 50 Cent:
“I seen you slaughter the careers of other men
But they were all brother men, so that’s just another win, For the other team, entertainment is what it seems, But black on black hatred is the underlying theme, Paid, powerful, and popular, you got it all
Use that to fight the real enemies and make ’em fall”
Dee-1 raps to Lil Wayne:
“Shouting out New Orleans at the Grammys, that’s cool
But how bout donating some cash money to help the schools
Wealth is cool, but not if you’re a selfish dude
(Get at him Dee! ) — Nah, let’s help this dude
Every statement that I yell is true”
Dee-1 raps to Jay-Z:
“Most of these lil rappers are whack, They spitting poison, they hurting the culture, they’re holding us back, But I’m trying to see how you feel, cause when you speak, people listen, Do you agree with me, disagree, or you feel indifferent? With all that you done sold, now you can afford to be Lyrically, Talib Kweli
But truthfully you ain’t gotta rhyme like Common Sense
Just be down for the cause and don’t ride the fence,”
Dee-1 makes a powerful effort to get the attention of Lil Wayne, 50 Cent and Jay-Z. However, each rapper became famous and rich after their music was promoted and distributed by white-owned record companies. Although rappers should be called out for their lack of responsibility, the record labels that distribute senseless music are more potent than any young black male with a pen, microphone and a break beat. –a.r.
