Album Review: Keri Hilson’s ‘No Boys Allowed’

Album Review: Keri Hilson's 'No Boys Allowed'

Shayla Drake of DBS Sounds provides an in-depth review of each song on Keri Hilson’s sophomore album No Boys Allowed as told to Amir Shaw.

1. Buyou (Feat. J. Cole)

“I liked this song. Keri sings about the importance of bringing something to the table when you’re in a relationship. J. Cole is the next big thing in hip-hop. I totally loved his verse. She sounded great on this song.”

2. Pretty Girl Rock

“This song is just about feeling confident about yourself and knowing that you are a pretty girl inside and out. I don’t think it was anything deeper than that.”

3. “The Way You Love Move”

“The edited version is on the album, but I’ve heard the unedited version too. I didn’t like the hook at all. I like Rick Ross’ verse, but I was turned off because of the unedited version.”

4.”Bahm Bahm/I Want You”

“The song starts off with a reggae beat and I don’t feel like that’s her style at all. But the beat switches and she sings ‘I Want You’ over an up-tempo track that she normally sings over and that was fine.”

5. “One Night Stand” (Feat. Chris Brown)

“I love this song. I love Chris Brown on it and it’s perfect for the bedroom. Keri really sounds seductive on this.”

6. “Lose Control/Let me Down” (Feat. Nelly)

“I feel like I’ve heard the beat before. But I love Nelly’s style and it hasn’t changed at all since he has come back. He was a good addition to the song and it blended in perfectly.”

7. “Toy Soldier”

“I didn’t grasp what she was singing about. It was distracting because the beat never dropped. I was anticipating the beat to drop, but the sound remained monotone.”

8. “Breaking Point”

“This is my favorite song. I think a lot of women can relate to the song. Every woman has a breaking point. You can’t just continue to hurt someone over and over again and expect for things to stay the same.”

9. “Beautiful Mistake”

“She sings about her relationship with a guy and it’s a mistake. But it’s not that bad because it can be interpreted as something good. I can relate to this song and I enjoyed it.”

10. “Gimme What I Want”

“This is a female empowerment song. She’s keeping it real, but still classy. It also has great production.”

11. “All The Boys”

“I like her introspection on this song. She’s being real with her feelings and admitting that she didn’t do everything right when it came to past relationships.”

12. “Pretty Girl Rock” (Remix Feat. Kanye West)

“I like the remix better than the original. Kayne West took the song to another level.”

Overall Verdict:

No Boys Allowed is a good project. The beats on most of the songs are good, the lyrics are good, her voice is beautiful and she sings about things that are relatable.”
