Atlantan Herman Cain has planted a flag in many corporate arenas. He was chairman of the board of the National Restaurant Association, he serves on the boards of mega-million dollar companies like Hallmark Cards, Whirlpool and AGCO, he’s a radio talk show host and the CEO and president of Godfather’s Pizza.
Now, Cain is planning to plant a major flag in the world of politics. On Wednesday, Jan. 12 the mogul announced that he’s creating a presidential exploratory committee, signaling his desire to run for the highest office in the land.
Cain, a conservative Republican, has never held elective office, leading many to justifiably believe his chances of winning are slim. Besides never having held office, he faces obstacles, some of his own making, that could all but guarantee a loss for the newcomer: he faces potential competition from Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney; he’s made harsh criticisms against Obama’s popular health care reform; and his connections to the black community are strained to say the least — a typical by-product of being black and Republican.
However, Cain is still hopeful that he has a good chance at winning the nomination:
“That’s the problem with some people’s thinking. There is the traditional, inside-the-box thinking about how to win an election as big as the presidency, and outside-the-box thinking,” Cain explained to CNN. “[To] people who say that Herman Cain has no chance of winning the nomination for the Republican Party, or [of] win[ning] the presidency, I simply say, ‘Thank you.’ ”
