Munson Steed of Steed Media Group spoke with students who are enrolled in DePaul University’s PRSSA program. Steed provided insight on the importance of embracing new media and shared how he transitioned his company from traditional to digital publishing.
On the transition to online media:
“We started rolling out magazine 12 years ago. For the first five years, we launched papers across the country and we were shooting pictures with film. We had to take the film to the drug store and wait an hour for the film to be developed. Now, with new technology, all of you are photographers and filmmakers. When I started in print, I held back on the internet. But now it’s full throttle.”
On understanding new media:
“Be early adapters. Discover what’s out there. You don’t want to be in a job interview and not know how to use Yelp. That is the power you have today. There’s no waiting today.”
On taking control of the moment:
“PR firms are looking for those who can do it all. Be excited about what you do. Today is about being connected to the world. You all are future publishers and PR specialists in training. It’s time to practice now while you’re here at DePaul. This is a great opportunity.”
