Bobby’s entrance into the music industry began as a member of R&B group “Mista” under his legal name, Bobby Wilson. From their self-titled debut album came the hit “Blackberry Molasses.” After experiencing management issues, the group disbanded, and he became a student at Clark Atlanta University while continuing to pursue a career in music.
Bobby V auditioned for the first season of American Idol, but was rejected by Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson. The defining moment in his career happened when his three album demos reached Sean Combs, who then passed it on to Ludacris and the president of Disturbing Tha Peace, Chaka Zulu. That lead to his being featured on Ludacris’ “Pimpin’ All Over the World.”
No longer signed to Def Jam or Disturbing Tha Peace, Bobby V is excited about being a part of today’s R&B lineup, with the impending release of his fourth studio album “Fly On The Wall.” When asked about his earlier vocal style of performing consistent “runs,” he stated “It’s about real singing on this album. I’m doing a lot more real singing and really showing my vocal abilities and my range, showing my falsetto.”
Apparently, the fans are pleased. The video for “Words,” the first single from “Fly On The Wall” has found itself consistently holding a spot on the top 10 videos on BET’s “106 and Park” since its debut.
Each Wednesday until Valentine’s Day, Bobby V has been leaking singles from “60 Minutes More” and, from the sound of “I Like” and “Good Girls,” it’s going to be the best free gift to lovers all over the world.
When reflecting on his life to date and how his upbringing affected his decision to pursue a career in music, he wouldn’t change a thing. “I think I was on the right track. There is nothing different that I would tell myself. I had a good family, a good foundation to lead me in the right direction, and I thank God every day for the opportunities I’ve had because I’ve done what I wanted to do in my life.” –suncera johnson
