Mizani's Bold Hair Show: 'Sketches'

Mizani brought the heat with its fashionable hair show, “Sketches,” during the America’s Beauty Show cosmetology convention held recently in Chicago.

Host and Mizani educator Geno Evans of Michigan gushed about the true creative artistry that took place on the Mizani stage.

“We’ve been talking about creating a collection and creating a look. How we arrived at ‘Sketches’ is starting off with a designer in New York City, Jonathan Cohen. After, we decided the texture and the fabric we were going to use,” Evans described. “Mizani decided to take our Natural Curl Key [an informative guide of various hair textures] and create fashion in the hair to go along with Jonathan Cohen fashions. With the curl key, Jonathan Cohen and five of the most fantastic hair designers in the country, we put together a collection called ‘Sketches.’ ”

In the world of fashion, a designer “sketches” a pattern and then creates a “toile,” a practice garment based on the sketch. For the Mizani show, the models wore simple toiles — accessorized with heels and measuring tape — with their hair in ponytails.

“The ‘Sketches’ collection is based on a ponytail,” explained Evans. “That’s why the models have the ponytails. In creating our toile, we took the ponytails, and we cut them in asymmetrical form. Asymmetrical silhouettes create looks that are going to be versatile.” Mizani’s internationally known style team transformed mile-high ponytails into various works of art.

Off the catwalk, the asymmetrical style is making a comeback, said Mizani stylist Vantiana Price of V Alexander Styling in Tinley Park, Ill. “We have the asymmetrical hairstyle coming back — lots of texture with hair color.” –zondra hughes
