Father and son, Will and Jaden Smith, clearly have a golden touch in Hollywood, and now the two are, once again, combining forces in a new futuristic science fiction film directed by M. Night Shyamalan.
According to deadline.com, Will and Jaden were signed on to the as yet untitled film by Sony Pictures Entertainment. Besides starring in the film, Will will serve as a producer alongside his Overbrook Production partners James Lassiter and Ken Stovitz, his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith and Shymalan, who also co-wrote the script with Gary Whitta.
The film’s storyline will take place 1,000 years in the future and center on a young boy (Jaden) trying to save himself and his estranged father (Will) after their ship crash lands on an abandoned and scary planet.
Early expectations for the film are mixed considering Shyamalan’s last film, a movie adaptation of the massively popular Nickelodeon cartoon series The Last Airbender, was universally panned by critics and fans of the series.
However, both Will and Jaden can lend their star power and appeal to film, having each scored number one films at the box office including Jaden’s last film, a reboot of The Karate Kid, which grossed $350 million worldwide, as well as the father and son team’s first movie together, The Pursuit of Happyness, which grossed $307 million worldwide.
