The silent auction offered unique and designer handbags, sparkling accessories, a Tuscan vacation and other specialty items, like an autographed Rolling Stones guitar, and services from leading designers, boutiques and retailers. Proceeds from the fundraiser will provide financial education to low-income women in Metro Atlanta.
“Last year, the funds we raised through Purse Strings helped women in our community learn how to get control of their finances and invest in themselves and their children’s futures,” said Suzanne Boas, president of CredAbility. “Knowledge is the first step toward self-empowerment and self-determination.”
CredAbility works with community partners to teach individuals how to cope financially with major life changes, handle credit wisely, build money management skills and reach financial goals. One of the seminars provided through Purse Strings funding is the “Empowering Women for Financial Success,” a series of five classes that teach women, who have been victims of domestic violence, basic financial skills. At press time, the program has served 2,400 Georgia women.
Purse Strings, whose mantra is “Where Changing Purses Changes Lives,” couldn’t have been held at a more fitting location. Ventanas, which is the Spanish term for windows, provided an awe-inspiring panoramic view of Atlanta’s skyline and beyond. It was symbolic of the limitless opportunities that are available to the participants who complete the financial education course.
Guests enjoyed great food, music by the band Very Desperate Housewives and cocktails as they mingled, networked and bid to support a worthy cause. Onsite mini-makeovers were offered by Dior Cosmetics.
The evening’s honorary chairs were WVEE V-103 FM’s mid-day personality Ramona DeBreaux; Dorsey Levens, actor and former Georgia Tech and Green Bay Packers running back; and Cindy Simmons of the “Cindy & Ray Morning Show” on Star 94 FM. –yvette caslin
