Lenny Kravitz Joins Cast of ‘The Hunger Games’

After displaying a noteworthy performance in Precious, Lenny Kravitz is pushing forward in the world of Hollywood. The rocker has nabbed a role in the upcoming film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ best-selling trilogy, The Hunger Games.

The Hunger Games is a futuristic sci-fi film set in the country of Panem, the post-apocalyptic remains of a crumbled North America. Panem is comprised of 12 districts and a capital. Each district is forced to supply two teenagers, a boy and a girl between the ages of 12 and 18, to participate in “Hunger Games,” a violent televised reality series where the contestants battle one another to the death.

According to hollywoodreporter.com, Kravitz will play the popular role of Cinna, an avant-garde fashion designer assigned to style the film’s main character, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), a skilled 16-year-old hunter who grows close with Cinna as he designs her performance enhancing gear.

The film’s director, Gary Ross, explained that he chose Kravitz for the role after seeing his performance as a nurse in the Oscar-winning film Precious, a role for which he was nominated for both an NAACP award and an ensemble cast SAG award.

“When I saw Lenny’s work in Precious, I was just knocked out,” Ross said. “It was quiet and strong and understated and openhearted: all qualities which define this character.”

Kravitz will join Stanley Tucci, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson in the film. The Hunger Games, produced by Lionsgate and Color Force’s Nina Jacobson, will be released nationwide on March 23, 2012.

What do you think of Kravitz new role? Are you planning to see the film?
