Sis to Sis Production Inc.’s founder, Hazel Simpson, and her co-producer, Johnnie Busch, have collaborated to bring Sisters & the Shrink, a stage play that highlights the dramatic lives of six women who decide to hire a therapist to help them through their personal problems. This play is filled with testimonies that will make you laugh, cry and shout. Sisters & the Shrink‘s message is that faith, love and trust in God will keep you in your purpose.
Here Simpson shares her inspiration for bringing to life a play that covers a subject that is still taboo in the black community: mental health. –yvette caslin
You are the writer, director and producer of Sisters & the Shrink, why did you feel compelled to tell this story?
I noticed in the workplace, there were females who always had issues in their lives. They would share their personal problems with co-workers in an effort find comfort. No matter what age or ethnic group, there was always something going on. I love to write because it’s the best way I can express myself. I plan to bring more exciting productions to the stage.
Who are you speaking to or whose story are you telling with this production?
I am speaking to women of all ethnic backgrounds, expressing to them that the decisions we make affect one other.
Sisters & the Shrink is playing at The God Father Studios, 620 Interchange Drive, Atlanta, Ga., 30336 on Aug. 27, 2011, at 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. For tickets and more information, visit www.sistersandtheshrink.eventbrite.com.
