Kanye West Honors Mother, Beyoncé and Jay-Z During Show: 7 Emotional Kanye Performance Moments

Kanye West Cries on Stage Over Late Mother (2007 and 2011)

In 2007, after Kanye’s mother, Donda West, died following complications from plastic surgery, West cried unconsolably after performing the track “Hey Mama” during a show at London’s O2 arena. The rapper did it, once again, in 2011 at the Coachella Festival.

“When I made the album, I was in a really dark place in my life .. .losing everything that was dear to me. To still love me after everything you’ve seen me say on TV … to still have fans … I really appreciate you all tonight, because I’m only trying to say and do what’s right … I’m not the best singer in the world,” West continued. He went on to talk about how it was the most authentic way for him to convey his feelings. “So many times I thought about not being here, but you make it all worth it… …This show is dedicated to you, Mama.”
