As the daughter of an exiled Tamil freedom fighter and former political refugee, M.I.A. has always used her politically-charged lyrics, videos and visual art as vehicles for awareness and change for the ongoing civil war in her homeland. M.I.A. has also been outspoken about third-world poverty and violence, racism toward minorities and the corruption of Western governments and even Google.
