This film presents three personal stories that chronicle black history in Michigan. A discussion will follow the showing, which will take place in the University Center.

Join BuildOn in commemorating the life and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as we march for education, march for a better Detroit, march for change, march for peace and march in honor of recapturing Dr. King’s dream and revolutionary spirit.

Detroit MLK 2012 Events2012 MLK Day at Friendship House: Service for Healthy Snacks (9540 Conant St., Hamtramck, Mich., 48212)

Jan. 16 to Jan. 24

The Friendship House MLK Day project will address health and nutritional education in Hamtramck. Creating 500 snack kits for middle and high school-aged Hamtramck youth; the kits will provide healthy snacks as well as a youth-friendly nutritional guide and will be distributed during after-school hours.

The Peace Walk begins at Hope United Methodist Church at 9:30 am and goes to the Southfield Pavillion at 11 a.m.

It’s Going on in the Hood –Ÿ University of Michigan Detroit Center (3663 Woodward Ave., Suite 150)
Monday, Jan. 16, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
“It’s Going On in the Hood” is a panel discussion about various efforts to aid Detroit’s neighborhoods. Detroit MLK 2012 Events2012 DETROIT MLK DAY RALLY AND MARCH: Jobs, Peace, & Justice – Central United Methodist Church (23 E. Adams and Woodward)

Monday, Jan. 16, Noon
The rally, a tribute to the Women of SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee), will start at noon in the sanctuary of the Central United Methodist Church, followed by a march through downtown Detroit, and culminating in a cultural celebration on the second floor of the church.

2012 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute – Max M. Fisher Music Center  (3711 Woodward)

Tuesday, Jan. 17, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Wayne State University’s annual tribute brings together the metro Detroit community to celebrate and honor the life and legacy of Dr. King.  The keynote speaker is Donna Brazile, best-selling author, adjunct professor at Georgetown University, a syndicated newspaper columnist for United Media, a columnist for Ms. and O magazines, and an on-air contributor to CNN, NPR and ABC. Net proceeds will support Adopt-a-Classroom, a nationally recognized organization that increases opportunity for student success.
