In the early ’90s, Prince went to war against his record label, Warner Bros., over creative control over his albums, claiming that the label wanted too much control over the release of his albums and also failed to support his albums properly. During this time, Prince also adopted the mantle of “Love Symbol #2” and famously marked his face with the word “Slave.” In 1996, Prince finally fulfilled his contractual agreement with Warner Bros. and was released from the label.
