Trayvon Martin Investigation: Police Chief Steps Down Temporarily

The Chief of Police in Sanford, Florida announced today that he’s stepping down temporarily in light of the controversy surrounding the Trayvon Martin investigation.

Chief Bill Lee announced around 3:30 Thursday that he would distance himself from the case during a press conference.

He announced his decision to the press saying,

“I am keenly aware of the emotions associated with the tragic death of a child […] I have come to the decision that I must temporarily remove myself from the position as police chief for the city of Sanford. I do this in the hopes of restoring some semblance of calm to the city which has been in turmoil for several weeks.”

In related news, the parents of Trayvon Martin are said to be meeting with justice officials today and will later attend a rally headed by The Reverend Al Sharpton.

Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old Black boy, was fatally shot last month by George Zimmerman, a self-appointed neighborhood watchman who thought he “looked suspicious.”
