Obama proclaimed support for same-sex marriages in an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts last week that has sparked controversy and consternation from black religious conservatives.
The letter states that the leaders “stand behind President Obama’s belief that same-sex couples should be allowed to join in civil marriages,” adding that the leaders “also affirm that individuals may hold different views on this issue but still work together towards our common goals: fair housing and equitable education, affordable health care and eradicating poverty, all issues of deep and abiding concern for our communities.”
The letter was signed by Rev. Al Sharpton, the founder of the National Action Network, Rev. Joe Lowery, NAACP Chairman Emeritus Julian Bond and Melanie Campbell, president of the National Coalition for Black Civic Engagement.
