Seattle Seahawks offensive tackle, Russell Okung, left the gridiron for a day to impact his hometown community by sponsoring the 2nd Annual Okung 76 Fun Day on Saturday, May 19, at George Bush High School. During the camp, the kids learned the fundamentals of football, leadership skills — on and off the field — team skills and sportsmanship.
The Okung 76 Fun Day is a program from the Russell Okung UP Foundation with a mission to reach out to children of single parent homes and offer hope through activities and information on the importance of a good education and social responsibility. Okung attended George Bush High School in Fort Bend County where he played offensive tackle and was named first-team all-Greater Houston, first-team all-district, and later listed as the 33rd best offensive tackle prospect of the class of 2006. “I’m from this community and I wanted to give back and let kids know that I’m a result of this community… of this environment. You see me— you go to school and do the right thing and you’ll get something out of it. It’s about giving these kids a chance to come out here and have a great time… I want to tell people to give back. It doesn’t have to be money, it can just be your time. Invest yourself in something. These kids are our future, so invest yourself in them and you’ll see the results of it,” shared Okung.
