The Atlanta Fire and Rescue team proved Saturday, June 9 that they rule the city when they beat the DeKalb County police squad in a battle for a coveted football championship title. The fire squad set the field at Hallford Stadium ablaze when they beat the police squad 7 to 6.
“Camaraderie, morale and health and wellness,” are the three key reasons, says Maj. Reginald Scandrett, that he felt compelled to organize the Metro Atlanta Public Safety Flag Football League. Scandrett joked that even though DeKalb came in No. 2, they still run the streets from I-285 to Memorial Drive to I-20.
DeKalb County’s Southwest DeKalb and Stephenson High Schools marching bands performed sets during halftime. Students from Southwest DeKalb were clad in T-shirts honoring former band member, the late Robert D. Champion, the Florida A&M University marching band member who died following a hazing incident. Drum Major For Change! RDC Foundation was inscribed on the back of their tees.
Eight metro law enforcement agencies participated in the league which held its inaugural game on Saturday, May 5. In addition to the aforementioned teams, they include Atlanta Corrections Department, Clayton County Sheriff’s Office, Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office, Henry County Sheriff’s Office and Police Department combined to form one team and DeKalb County’s fire and rescue.
After the distribution of trophies, fans joined the teams on the field for the “Wobble” soul line dance. Check out the photos. –yvette caslin
