Meet: Singer Anita Wilson
Genre: Gospel
Latest project: Worship Soul
How long have you been singing?
I have been singing all my life. I am a pastor’s kid. I was in the church choir since I was 5. Our family had a singing group back in the day.
What drew you to gospel music?
I have a love and appreciation for all music. I love soul music, jazz and R&B. I am just a Baptist church girl but this is where my heart is and gospel music comes natural for me. There has been and will be some events that I may cover a Stevie Wonder song. But my [heart] remains in gospel music.
What qualifications or education helped you prepare you for this career?
My many years of experience and I learned a lot from working with Donald Lawrence. … He is a wealth of knowledge. I just was attentive while being on the road or doing a video with him, and learning from others I met while traveling. I am very grateful to have had the chance to sit under Donald; he is a great mentor.
When was your aha moment when it became clear that this is what you were supposed to do with your life?
The aha moment was I was on the list to do solo project with Donald Lawrence. I was never the [type of] person [who was] eager to put myself out in the limelight, [but] I was very comfortable with what I was singing and knew that I had natural gift from God. I was driving down the street and had a revelation from God to pursue my singing career. This was the moment that put the fire under me to continue.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to build a career in gospel music?
Be sure it is what God wants you to do. It’s a calling, take your time. Be certain with what you are doing and what message you are trying to convey. Make the most of your platform in a positive way.
Anita Wilson will begin a tour in the fall. Her album, Worship Soul, can be purchased online or go to EMIgospel.com.
