MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — The 16 annual American Black Film Festival got off to a jolting start with the jarring and provocative film Beast of the Southern Wild, a high-quality film from first-time director about the mighty struggles of families who lived on the other side of the levees in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina roared ashore. And it ended with a memorable encore presentation of Roger Bobb’s and BobbCat Productions’ Raising Izzie about two young girls raising themselves after their mother succumbed to cancer. In between were extremely informative panel discussions from the likes of Rainforest Films founders Will Packer and Rob Hardy, as well as a greatly-received workshop conducted by critically-acclaimed and commercially-successful husband and wife team of Salim and Mara Brock-Akil, the creators of “Girlfriend” and “The Game.” Sprinkled liberally throughout the four-day festival of movies, of course, were industry parties that most won’t soon forget, much less recover from.
