The 10 Most Dangerous Cities in America

10 Most Dangerous Cities in the Country

As the summer temperatures rise to record-breaking levels, it’s no secret that the violent crime rate often spikes in many U.S. cities. A prime example? Chicago, where four people were killed and at least 30 were wounded in shootings all in the span of a two-day weekend in June. Since then several news outlets have compared Chicagos’ crime issue to that of Kabul, Afghanistan where the number of U.S. troops killed in the foreign country is less than the number of civilians killed in the Windy City. With that in mind you may be curious about the city you reside in and wonder if it’s really as safe as you think.

Based on the FBI’s 2011 Uniform Crime Report, 24/7 Wall St. has compiled a list of the 10 U.S. cities with populations of 100,000 or more with the highest rates of violent crime. The site calculated the rates of murder, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault to rank the cities while taking in account their median income, poverty and unemployment rates. Note: Even with Chicago’s recent reports of rampant crime, it did not make the list.
