Angela Christine Stevens, affectionately known as Angie, is a wonder of sorts. The award-winning hair stylist is as spectacular as the Great Lakes and the Pacific Ocean, which she connects geographically with her frequent travels from her native Chicago to her home-away-from-home in Los Angeles. Stevens maintains a full clientele in both world-class cities, and is a resident stylist at the renowned Kimble Hair Studio servicing Hollywood’s elite.
Here, the cast member on the hit WeTV reality TV show, “L.A. Hair,” Stevens, offers tips on natural hair, weaves, wigs, the big chop and big hair, and her opinion on what black men like. –yvette caslin
Why have black women started to accept natural hair as the best hair solution?
I think the main reason women have begun to shift toward natural is because it’s more cost effective than relaxing every 6-8 weeks. Women are starting to realize it’s a lot healthier for their hair. It grows faster; it looks fuller, and is a great form of self-expression and personal style.
How are black men receiving the natural hair revolution? Is it sexy? Do some men prefer it?
Most men in general seem to prefer hair they can run their fingers through and touch without their woman flipping out on them. Aside from that, I think most men like whatever makes their woman look and feel her best.
What are your suggestions for someone who is considering a natural hairstyle?
Do your research and try some textured hairstyles like rod and twist sets to see if you like the way you look with big hair. Also, consult a professional about transitioning options, there are several.
What are the best natural hair styles that you’ve seen worn by black celebrities?
I’m obsessed with Solange’s style overall but I think she has made the biggest statement with her natural hair from the shaved head, to the large coiled curls, waist-length braids, to the mid-size fro. She is a great representation of the revolution. Janelle Monae, Chrisette Michele, Esperanza Spalding and Kelly Rowland are also some natural hair favorites of mine.
As a stylist, who also believes in healthy hair, do you suggest that women cut their hair low to get a fresh start?
I do not recommend women cut off all their hair for a fresh start. Short hair isn’t for everyone, keeping your confidence with a new look is key. Although, the big chop might be the best solution for some, there’s nothing wrong with cutting the relaxer as it grows.
Do wigs and weaves offer solutions as women make the transition from processed to natural hair styles?
Hair extensions are a great alternative when choosing to go natural. For my clients it’s the most popular way. Regular trims between braiding will ensure the hair is healthy and you are getting closer to your natural hair goals. Also, deep conditioning and hot oil treatments are key when wearing extensions regularly.
How does a celebrity hair stylist help women going natural?
The celebrity hairstylist title usually makes clients feel like they are getting trend, in addition to professional attention. I pride myself on giving clients the same attention, celebrity or not, and quite frankly it’s the regular clients that have made my career the most meaningful. Going natural is a journey that every woman, celebrity or not, can relate to. It’s up to me to help them stay informed and give them a stylish new look they will feel like a celebrity wearing.
Next week, Stevens will offers tips on how to bring out the star in you.
