America’s Most Obese States
Although our first lady has been adamant about the fight obesity ‘Let’s Move’ campaign, a number of states are still struggling to control obesity rates in children and adults alike. According to the Centers For Disease Control, 35 percent of adult Americans are obese, resulting in a staggering $147 billion in obesity related medical costs. Similarly, the CDC estimates that medical costs for an obese person is $1,429 higher than those of normal weight. More specifically when it comes to rates of excess body fat, southern non-Hispanic blacks take the cake (pun intended) and have the highest age-adjusted rates of obesity at 49.5 percent. Surprisingly or not so surprisingly, most of the states with the highest rates of obesity are below the Mason-Dixon line.
