Times have definitely changed. When Ellen DeGeneres went on Oprah and told the world she was gay back in the mid-90’s, she was ostracized. The country was outraged. Her successful “Ellen” comedy sitcom was cancelled soon thereafter and she said she was thrust into the throes of a deeps depression.

Yet, a decade later, DeGeneres started what has become the most popular daytime talk show in America, even eclipsing the Queen of Talk, Oprah Winfrey, in the ratings before the billionaire retired. While it was a painful experience, DeGeneres was one of the most influential change agents in terms of changing the country’s perception and acceptance of homosexuality. Today when a star comes out, the country yawns.
