She was angelic in her debut role as Trey’s mother in the John Singleton classic Boyz N the Hood and quickly followed that up with her Academy Award-nominated role (and her biggest role to date), What’s Love Got to Do with It? opposite Lawrence Fishburne. And even though she starred in high-profile urban vehicles, How Stella Got Her Groove Back and Waiting to Exhale, mainstream success for this Yale-educated thespian proved elusive and she articulated some bitterness over this fact.
