How were you introduced to music?
I’m originally from Cameroon, my mom played the piano and she taught me to play the piano when I was very little. We had a record player, so every day we’d wake up and we’d play records; everything from Dolly Parton to Fleetwood Mac, to Bob Marley. We we’re old school because it took time for stuff to get to us in Cameroon!
Do your old school musical roots influence your music today?
It immensely influenced me because I was exposed to such a wider range of music. It wasn’t just one-dimensional; it was so expansive that it [compels] me to be open to different sounds.
How did you get here, at this point in your career?
I’m such a baby in this industry. How did I start? How did I get here? I think I’m still getting there, I feel that the journey is just beginning and I don’t know if I’ll ever be ‘there.’ I just know that this is what I want to do; I’ve always sang and I’ve always written songs and poetry, so this is me.
