DMX has openly spoken about suffering from bipolar disorder and using drugs to cope with his depression. In a 2011 interview he claimed that he sometimes has a hard time separating DMX from Earl Simmons (his real name).

    All of these people have the same thing in common, Success in the Industry. Be it music, movies, sports, politics or corporate America, the more appealing you become, the higher you go, the more attention you start to get from those who prey upon your desires and have the power to manifest those desires for you. Yet many comply out of weakness or greed and when the payment gets to high and they don’t wanna do it anymore, their lives are destroyed and they are made out to be crazy, schizo or “bipolar”.
