If you’re familiar with the name Freeman Hrabowski, then you know how the president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, has been successful at guiding African American students into science and engineering. Along with his long list of accomplishments, he’s credited with overseeing the institution that is one of the nation’s leading sources of African-American Ph.D.s in science and engineering — a field in which blacks are traditionally underrepresented — and almost half of its seniors attend graduate school.
