Winnsboro, La. police have confirmed that the woman burned alive was attacked by three men wearing white hoodies at a park in Franklin Parish on Sunday, Oct 21. The FBI is investigating to see if this is in fact a hate crime. Evidence has led them to believe that Sharmeka Moffitt, 20, was set on fire for wearing an Obama t-shirt. The letters “KKK-N—-r” were spray-painted on the hood of her car.
The Franklin Parish Sheriff, Louisiana State Police and the State Fire Marshall’s office are also participating in the investigation.
A friend of the family has confirmed that Moffitt has burns on 90 percent of her body and was currently in stable condition at the LSU-Shreveport hospital. The Facebook page “Prayers for Sharmeka Moffitt” was created on Sunday night to support the victim and encourage the media to cover the story.
